Since 1840

Our story

How a Blue Ridge farm became a records-first home for Highland cattle and miniature donkeys.

A farm with history

The farm we call Highlands Rest has been worked since 1840. When our family took it on, we set out to raise animals the way this valley has always done it best: on pasture, in the open, with time and patience. The mountains gave the farm its name, and the animals give it its life.

What we raise

Scottish Highland cattle are the heart of the program, in both miniature and mid-size frames. Their long coats and easy temperaments suit our mountain winters, and our breeding choices favor soundness, structure, and disposition. Alongside them we keep miniature Mediterranean donkeys, gentle companions and steady guardians, and a loft of racing homer pigeons that carries on a much older farming tradition.

How we care

Every animal at Highlands Rest lives on records. Health results, pedigrees, breedings, and daily care are tracked in Creatures, the same platform that runs this website, so what you see here is what we see in the barn. When you ask about an animal, you are never buying a mystery.
